Flying from New York to Cairo — everything you need to know.

New York is the best-connected US gateway to Egypt, and the logistics are simpler than most travelers expect. EgyptAir operates the only nonstop service, departing JFK six times per week and landing at Cairo International Airport in around 10 hours 25 minutes. You leave New York in the early afternoon and arrive in Cairo the following morning — a civilized schedule that gives you a full day upon arrival.

If you prefer a connecting flight — or want to fly with a US carrier — multiple excellent options route through European hubs. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, ITA Airways via Rome, and KLM via Amsterdam all offer competitive fares and strong business class products. Total journey time with a connection typically runs 13–16 hours depending on the layover.

New York practical notes

✦  EgyptAir departs from JFK Terminal 1 — allow at least 2.5 hours before departure for international check-in

✦  Subway lines A and E serve JFK; add AirTrain from Howard Beach or Jamaica station ($5 + subway fare)

✦  EgyptAir’s nonstop uses a Boeing 787 Dreamliner — comfortable cabin with lie-flat business class seats

✦  Best months to book from NYC: September, January and February offer the lowest fares

✦  US citizens need a tourist visa — available on arrival in Cairo for $25, or online in advance via visa2egypt.gov.eg

Istanbul (IST) is the most popular connecting point for New York travelers — 32% of one-stop bookings route through there. Turkish Airlines business class via Istanbul is widely considered the best-value premium product on this route.

EgyptAir launches nonstop LAX→Cairo.
Starting May 23, 2026.

This is genuinely significant news for West Coast travelers: EgyptAir is launching nonstop flights between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Cairo, effective May 23, 2026 — three times per week, on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. This will be EgyptAir’s longest route by distance, at over 7,600 miles, and Egypt’s first direct link to the US West Coast in decades.

The flight is blocked at 13 hours 45 minutes eastbound (LAX to Cairo) and 14 hours 50 minutes westbound. The schedule is well-timed: EgyptAir MS984 departs Los Angeles at 5:25pm and arrives in Cairo at 5:10pm the following day local time — meaning you sleep on the plane and wake up in Egypt, ready to go.

Before the nonstop launches — or for those who prefer to fly via a hub — Los Angeles is extremely well-connected to Cairo through European gateways. ITA Airways via Rome is consistently among the fastest and most affordable options, at around 16–17 hours total travel time. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul, British Airways via London, and Lufthansa via Munich are all strong alternatives with excellent premium class products.

Los Angeles practical notes

✦  The new EgyptAir nonstop (from May 23) departs LAX at 5:25pm — a comfortable evening departure for West Coast travelers

✦  Before May 23, ITA Airways via Rome FCO offers the fastest total journey time from LAX at around 15h 40m

✦  LAX connects to Cairo via New York JFK with American Airlines + EgyptAir — a solid option for those who want a US carrier for the transatlantic leg

✦  Cheapest months from LAX: November, January and February — fares drop 18–25% vs. peak season

✦  Business class roundtrip from LAX to Cairo from approximately $3,378 with SWISS or EgyptAir

Which airline should you
actually book?

The honest answer depends on what you’re optimizing for. Here’s a practical breakdown for US travelers flying to Egypt in 2026.

EgyptAir

MS — Star Alliance
  • Only nonstop from JFK (and LAX from May 2026)
  • Boeing 787 Dreamliner — reverse herringbone business class

  • Mixed reviews on service; improving significantly since 2022

Turkish Airlines

TK — Star Alliance
  • Excellent business class — lie-flat, great food
  • IST layover typically 2–3 hours — manageable
  • Strong frequent flyer value via Miles&Smiles
  • Istanbul airport (IST) is modern and easy to navigate
  • Best connecting option from both NYC and LAX

ITA Airways

AZ — SkyTeam
  • Rome FCO layover — worth a stopover if time allows
  • Consistently the cheapest connecting fare from both coasts
  • Good economy product on modern aircraft
  • Codeshare with Delta — earn SkyMiles
  • Best budget-conscious option from LAX

Emirates / Qatar

EK / QR — via Gulf hubs

The best time to fly to Egypt
from the US.

Egypt rewards those who time their visit intelligently. The question of when to fly is really two questions: when do you want to be there, and when should you book?

When to be there: October through April is the golden window for the full Egypt experience — comfortable temperatures in Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan for sightseeing, and excellent Red Sea conditions for diving and sailing. November through February is peak season; October, March, and April offer the best balance of good weather and lower pricing.

When to book: For peak-season travel (November–February), book your flights at least 3–4 months in advance. Fares from New York to Cairo average $306–$900 round-trip depending on airline and timing. January and September are the cheapest months to fly — fares drop 18–25% vs. the December high season.

Flight booking calendar — NYC & LAX to Cairo

✦  Cheapest months: January, September, November — fares from ~$306 (NYC) and ~$667 (LAX)

✦  Most expensive: December holidays and June — book 4–6 months ahead for Christmas travel

✦  Best day to book: Sunday departures are consistently 6–13% cheaper than Friday

✦  Business class from NYC: from ~$2,500 round-trip with Turkish Airlines via Istanbul

✦  Business class from LAX: from ~$3,378 round-trip with SWISS or EgyptAir (from May 2026)

Cairo airport — what to
expect on arrival.

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is a well-organized international hub — larger and more navigable than its reputation suggests. You’ll arrive at Terminal 2 (most international flights) or Terminal 3. The first thing to do is sort your visa if you haven’t obtained one online in advance.

Cairo arrival checklist

✦  Visa on arrival: $25 USD cash, available at the visa counter before immigration — straightforward process, 10 minutes

✦  E-visa (recommended): Apply online at visa2egypt.gov.eg before departure — faster immigration on arrival

✦  Currency: Egyptian Pound (EGP) — exchange at the airport or use ATMs. USD and EUR are accepted at most luxury hotels

✦  SIM card: Available at the arrivals hall — Vodafone Egypt offers excellent data packages for ~$10 for 30 days

✦  Transport to hotel: Pre-arranged private transfer recommended — avoid unofficial taxis at the terminal

✦  Pyramids proximity: Marriott Mena House is 30 minutes from the airport — you can see the Pyramids from your room the same day you land

From Cairo, domestic flights to the Red Sea (Hurghada) take just 45 minutes — multiple departures daily. Luxor is 1 hour. Aswan is 1.5 hours. The entire country becomes accessible within the same day you arrive from New York or Los Angeles. This is what makes Egypt so rewarding for US travelers who plan carefully: the geography rewards you generously for the long-haul flight.

What happens after
you land is the best part.

Boreas luxury Red Sea cruise floating resort Egypt

The Red Sea — 45 minutes by air from Cairo. The Boreas floating resort departs from Hurghada and Port Ghalib.

The reason so many US travelers from New York and Los Angeles make the long-haul flight to Egypt is simple: what you find on the other side is completely unlike anything accessible from the Caribbean or the Pacific. Ancient temples built 3,400 years ago. Coral reefs of extraordinary clarity. Grand hotels where Churchill and Agatha Christie slept. And the Red Sea — one of the greatest diving and sailing destinations on earth.

At Boreas, we design complete Egypt journeys for US travelers that combine the ancient sites with a luxury Red Sea experience. You fly into Cairo, we take care of everything else — private Egyptologist guides at the Pyramids and Luxor, stays at the legendary historic hotels, and then a seamless transfer to the Boreas floating resort for your Red Sea sailing.

The Boreas Experience — what you’re sailing on

Boreas is Egypt’s first luxury floating resort — a 300m² vessel built in 2026 to marine-grade steel, designed from the keel up for guests who want resort life at sea, not a dive boat with upgraded cabins. Full spa, sea pool, two bars, gourmet Mediterranean dining with live music, gym with sea views, and a water slide.

We sail 2–7 day itineraries from Hurghada and Port Ghalib — reaching the remote southern dive sites that day boats can’t access. Maximum 20 guests. PADI professionals aboard. Full private charter available for families and groups of 10–20.

From New York or Los Angeles, you’ve made the journey. Make it count.
